Nea Kameni is younger than most of the churches on the caldera rim above it. The islet first broke the water in 1573; its final lava flow cooled in 1950, giving it one of the few documented birth dates in Greek geography.

The geology is not subtle. Nea Kameni's summit trail climbs roughly 130 metres over loose scoria to a rim of nested craters, where fumaroles still vent sulphurous steam. Palea Kameni, the older islet, holds the springs. Therasia closes the western arc.
